METHODOLOGY

Our materials and methods include documentation of all kinds through video interviews, conversations and surveys.

Surveys: To extend the many existing studies on the demographics on Mechanical Turk, we conducted a survey of 600 Mechanical Turk workers. Workers were paid $1 per survey, which was projected to take four minutes to complete. This equated to $15 per hour, a premium wage on the platform. The survey instrument included 21 questions exploring demographics. The survey data will be made publicly available in CSV form shortly via this website.  The survey explored who are Mechanical Turk workers, where do they live, how much do they make? and what are the most and least gratifying parts of work on Mechanical Turk?

Photos: We gathered 800 photos from mTurk workers. Each worker was paid $.30 to take a photograph of their home workspace and tag the nearest city, which was projected to take a minute and 20 seconds to complete. This equated to $15 per hour, a premium wage on the platform.

Videos: We asked 100 mTurk workers to record and upload a one-two minute video. Each worker was paid $2.00 which equates to $15 per hour (at a projected eight minutes for the entire HIT to be competed). Workers were asked to record themselves completing these sentences -

1.     I live near (say nearest city)...

2.     I started Turking because...

3.     What I like about Turking is...

4.     What I don't like about Turking is...

5.     I think Turking will keep going until...

6.     I'd also like to share the following about Turking for those who don't kno about it…
